2025 Golden Globes: ‘Abbott Elementary’ Fails to Secure Any Wins

The cast of Abbott Elementary exchanged the classroom for a night out at the 2025 Golden Globes, even though the cherished program did not win any more prizes this year.

On Sunday, January 5, the cast celebrated their two nominations by arriving at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles for the 82nd edition of the award event. Quinta Brunson, the show’s creator and star, was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Comedy, while the ABC series received a nomination for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy.

In the end, Jean Smart defeated 35-year-old Brunson for her performance on Hacks. Hacks defeated Abbott Elementary later that night in the Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy category.

Abbott Elementary was up against Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, Nobody Wants This, and The Gentlemen and the Bear in the best comedy category. Abbott, who won the coveted prize in 2023, is being nominated in the category for the third time. The Bear prevailed at the event last year.

Brunson, 35, was nominated for the third time on Sunday for her role as Janine Teagues. She was honored this year together with Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building), Kathryn Hahn (Agatha All together), Jean Smart (Hacks), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), and Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This). Brunson, a first-time contender, took home the Golden Globe in 2023. Last year, she was nominated as well, but Edebiri won.

This year, Abbott’s supporting cast received no Golden Globe nominations. Sheryl Lee Ralph and Janelle James both lost to Julia Garner for Ozark in 2023’s Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series – Comedy/Musical or Drama category. Tyler James Williams, who plays Gregory Eddie, Bruson’s romantic interest, was a first-time candidate and won Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series – Comedy/Musical or Drama in 2023.

There has been significant progress in the sitcom since Abbott’s first Golden Globe won for its first season. In season three, Janine and Gregory became a couple, fulfilling fans’ wishes. Season 4 has generated a lot of laughter since its October 2024 premiere and is ready to offer more in a much-anticipated crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Regarding the unique occasion, Brunson exclusively told Us Weekly, “I think it’s very cool.” “I think it’s surprising, and I think the audience of both shows will enjoy it.” You know, I believe that viewers of our shows will find it really intriguing. Additionally, I think it’s okay if kids watch one show and not the other because it will pique their interest in that particular program. I’m simply thrilled about it and believe it’s a fun approach to change up television.
