After being canceled on Showtime, American Rust was picked up by Amazon Freevee in 2022. Its second season will debut on Prime Video. On March 28, all 10 episodes of the new S2 title, American Rust: Broken Justice, will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. For Season 2, Amazon has also added eight new cast members (see below).
American Rust: Broken Justice, starring Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney, transports us to the made-up little town of Buell, Pennsylvania. Following the terrifying events of Season One, Del Harris (Daniels) and Grace Poe (Tierney) attempt to start over in their lives. A series of ostensibly unconnected killings that begin in Season Two give rise to a far bigger plot that puts everyone in this small, close-knit community in danger.
There is a past to American Rust. A few months after USA Network first ordered it straight-to-series, the network decided not to proceed with it. This was originally ordered in November 2017. Sources claimed at the time that the order was conditioned on the producers casting a well-known actor in the lead role, which they were unable to do. After that, it relocated to Showtime, where Daniels was signed on to executive produce and star. The show ran for one season there. In January 2022, the network declared that it will not be extended. After Showtime canceled the drama, Freevee took it up in June 2022. Other projects that were originally ordered at IMDb TV but later renamed as Amazon Freevee, including the Cruel Intentions revival that ultimately failed, have also moved from Freevee to Prime.
The first season of American Rust, which debuted on Showtime, was based on Philipp Meyer’s highly acclaimed novel and followed police chief Del Harris as he explored the shattered American Dream in a southwest Pennsylvania Rust Belt community. When Tierney, the guy Harris loves, is charged with murder, Harris’s morals are called into question and he must choose what level of protection he is ready to give up.
Daniels and Tierney are not the only members of the returning cast from Season 1; other cast members include David Alvarez as Isaac English, Rob Yang as Chief Steve Park, Julie Mayorga as Lee English, Alex Neustaedter as Billy Poe, and Kyle Beltran as Detective Fisher.
As Detective Angela Burgos, Luna Lauren Velez (Dexter), Marc Menchaca (Ozark) as Vic Walker, Nick Sandow (Orange Is the New Black) as Mike Orr, Brian Seibert (A Murder at the End of the World) as Cynthia Frazier, Christopher Denham (Billions) as Russell Wolff, Amelia Workman (FBI) as Rinna Bransford, Leon Addison Brown (The Knick) as Chief Bolt, and Sara Lindsey (High Desert) as Maya Park are among the new cast members for Season 2.
Dan Futterman, Adam Rapp, Jeff Daniels, Paul Martino, Michael De Luca, Ivan Schneeberg, David Fortier, Nick Nantell, Katie O’Connell Marsh, and Elisa Ellis are the executive producers of American Rust: Broken Justice.
Boat Rocker is a global producer and distributor of American Rust: Broken Justice.
