Janet Leigh Holden McCormack and Eric McCormack are divorcing.
According to court paperwork that PEOPLE was able to access, the filmmaker and the 60-year-old Will and Grace actor are divorcing after more than 26 years of marriage.
In addition to asking the court to stop Eric from receiving spousal support, Janet, who filed for divorce alleging “irreconcilable differences,” is also seeking spousal support.
The divorce was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court the day before Thanksgiving, but she omitted a date of separation from the document. The news was initially reported by TMZ.
When PEOPLE asked for comment, neither Eric’s nor Janet’s representatives responded right away.
On the set of the CBS TV series Lonesome Dove, the ex-couple initially got together in 1994. At the time, Eric played Col. Francis Clay Mosby, and Janet was the assistant director.
After getting married in August 1997, the couple welcomed their only child, a son named Finnigan Holden McCormack, into their family five years later.
The first official picture Eric and Janet had taken together was from the 1994 Lonesome Dove wrap party, which he posted back in April 2020.
“This is the first shot Janet & I took at the #LonesomeDove Season 1 Wrap Party, circa Dec ’94,” he captioned the photo. It so happened that this was the party where we came out. We had been dating for months, but no one on the show knew.🤯.”
In a 2007 interview titled “What I know about women,” Eric revealed nuggets about his relationship with Janet to The Guardian.
“In 1994, while working on a TV show, I got to know my wife, Janet. Her title was assistant director. I was unable to be trusted, having recently ended a relationship,” he stated. “Janet was unlike the actresses I had been dating.” She drove a pickup truck and dressed in denim.
“At first, she wasn’t too keen,” Eric went on. She was aware that becoming an actor required a lot of work; it would be like bringing your job home.
However, I was able to persuade her. In the first season, we had an affair in secret. Dating crew, that is! She wasn’t meant to offer any of the actors special attention, so in reality, it was far harder for her,” the actress continued.
