Fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians can now finally see their eagerly anticipated TV adaptation, and Disney+ has assembled the ideal cast.
The show, which is based on the same-titled book series by author Rick Riordan, was initially hinted about in May 2020. In a video statement released on Disney+ in January 2022, Riordan subsequently reaffirmed the news.
At the time, he said, “Demigods, the wait is over.” It gives me great pleasure to be the first to inform you that Percy Jackson and the Olympians will undoubtedly soon appear on your television screens. The astute people at Disney+ have granted us approval.
The five books in the series, which were released between 2005 and 2009, introduced readers to 12-year-old Percy Jackson, a Demigod who learns he is the son of Poseidon, the Greek sea god. (The narrative was originally made into a movie, which received harsh criticism from fans, and a sequel starring Logan Lerman.)
Walker Scobell will play the title character in Percy Jackson, Disney+ said less than a month after it was confirmed that the series would debut on television.
At the time, Riordan posted on his blog, “Walker Scobell is an incredibly talented young man who blew us away with his audition tapes for the role of Percy.” Walker had the ideal balance of comedic timing, tenderness, rebelliousness, sarcasm, and heroism to play our beloved Percy Jackson, as the rest of the team and I could see. He will exceed your most optimistic expectations from the very first scene of the performance.
Leah Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri, who play Percey’s confidants Grover Underwood and Annabeth Chase, respectively, arrived next.
“In the making, heroes. 🗡⚡️🐐 In May 2022, the official Disney+ Instagram account posted, “Introducing Grover, Percy, and Annabeth.” Simhadri “won” the “hearts” of the casting room, according to Riordan, who stated on his website that the author was “laughing out loud with his delivery and timing.”
After Jeffries read for the part for the first time, Riordan considered her to be his “number one choice for Annabeth.” He said, “Leah is precisely how I pictured [her] in the books: intelligent, brave, and strong—a real daughter of Athena who has no tolerance for the silliness of a certain Seaweed Brain. “I saw Annabeth Chase come to life watching her act with Walker and Aryan.”
The eight-episode series debuted officially in December 2023. The first two episodes were available on Disney+, while the remaining episodes were released on a weekly basis. The show attracted a staggering 13.3 million viewers in its first week of airing, which quickly made it popular with viewers.
Tuesdays are when Percy Jackson and the Olympians releases new episodes onDisney+.
