The 2023 Academy Museum Gala will now take place in Los Angeles on December 3rd, having been moved from its planned September date that was affected by the Israel-Hamas War. Stars ranging from Lupita Nyong’o, Selena Gomez, Natalie Portman, Simu Liu, Dua Lipa, and Lupita Nyong’o strolled the red and pink carpet that extended beneath the museum’s Sphere structure. The fundraiser has grown to be a popular stop on the awards circuit for many of the celebrities who are attending, many of whose films are vying for top honors.
The evening is scheduled to honor four notable figures in the entertainment industry: Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, and Sofia Coppola. It is the third annual benefit for the movie museum, which features exhibitions featuring the works of director John Waters, Lourdes Portillo, and the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood.
Winfrey will be awarded the Pillar Award, which recognizes leadership and support for the Academy Museum; Michael B. Jordan will receive the Vantage Award, which goes to an emerging artist or scholar working to challenge and contextualize existing dominant narratives around film; and Streep will receive the Icon Award, which is given to an artist whose career had a notable influence worldwide. Coppola will receive the Visionary Award, which goes to an artist or scholar whose innovations have advanced film as an art.
Ava DuVernay, Halle Berry, Ryan Murphy, and Dr. Eric Esrailian are the co-chairs for the evening. During the carpet, one of the most memorable moments was when Winfrey and Streep paused to take a group shot while holding hands.
