On Monday, the mother of 5-year-old twin boys and girls discovered them dead inside an apartment in New York City.
Police responded to a 911 call around 11:20 a.m. local time, according to a statement received by PEOPLE from an NYPD representative. Inside an apartment at 240 East 175th Street in the Bronx, officers discovered a 5-year-old male and a 5-year-old female “unconscious and unresponsive.”
The statement also stated that “EMS arrived and declared the aided children deceased at the scene.”
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will ascertain the cause of the children’s deaths as part of the continuing inquiry.
Authorities informed CBS New York that the family had no history of domestic violence and that there were no outward symptoms of trauma to the children or carbon monoxide detected upstairs.
Assistant Chief Benjamin Gurley of the NYPD stated, “At this time, we don’t know if there was any foul play,” according to the outlet.
Gurley went on, “You can imagine what the family’s going through when you go up there and even myself going up there and the officers see two 5-year-olds laying on the floor unresponsive and cold at this time of year.” “You can only imagine the father’s suffering, the mother’s.”
Authorities discovered, according to ABC7, that the kids were sent home from school last week due to illness and remained at home on Monday. When the incident occurred, their mother was also present at home with them.
The outlet claims that she was admitted to the hospital for emotional anguish after that.
Gurley stated, “The father is currently at the 46th Precinct, cooperative,” according to the publication. “To receive treatment, the mother was taken to the hospital. She is not hurt, but she is in a state of emotional distress.”
He went on, saying, “At this point, we are going to treat it as a crime scene because we don’t know if it’s foul play or not,” ABC7 said. “We wish to leave the scene unaltered. Whether foul play occurred will be determined by the medical examiner based on their investigation and our crime scene unit’s findings.”
