The largest streaming studios should create and commission as many innovative features as they can because streaming services are taking over and consumers are loving watching films in the comfort of their own homes more and more. More and more A-list actors are following suit and agreeing to star in major productions, even if they are exclusively for streaming services, as they transition from theatre debuts to streaming.
It wouldn’t be incorrect to observe, nevertheless, that some of the future streaming films might be worthwhile seeing in a theatre. Large crowds could be drawn to the theatres to watch their favourite actors on the big screens thanks to their plots, casts, or just the possibility. Many of these films are confirmed to be available for streaming on Netflix, Paramount, Apple TV+, and Amazon at this time, albeit some are not completely bypassing theatrical releases.
Untitled Kathryn Bigelow Project
It appeared that Kathryn Bigelow and Netflix would never work together again after her almost-completed Netflix production Aurora was cancelled and canned. But in September of this year, Deadline revealed that she will be working again with Jason Clarke, who starred in her blockbuster Zero Dark Thirty, on an unnamed project that would centre on the White House personnel. According to the IMDb synopsis, the tale centres on the White House staff’s real-time preparation for a missile strike.
In addition to Clarke, the cast includes Idris Elba, Jared Harris, Rebecca Ferguson, and Greta Lee, according to IMDb and Deadline. Although Netflix is producing this film and it will debut there, it would be a shame if it didn’t also have a theatrical release given the plot, the cast, and the widespread appreciation for Bigelow’s work. Although that hasn’t been decided, it’s encouraging to know that users won’t have to leave the comforts of their home to watch a potentially terrific film that may become the most streamed movie when it’s released.
It is anticipated that Netflix will release The Untitled Kathryn Bigelow Project in 2025.
“Play Dirty”
Play Dirty, one of the most anticipated Amazon Original films of the upcoming year, is the result of the collaboration between Amazon, Team Downey, and Shane Black. Parker (Mark Wahlberg), the main character of 24 of Donald Westlake’s novels written under the pen name Richard Stark, is a professional thief who specialises in large-scale robberies and crimes. Parker’s primary motivation is retaliation, and he is a chilly, professional figure. The Hunter, the first book in the series, will be the basis for the film.
With Play Dirty, Shane Black returns to directing after working on the Predator revival in 2018. LaKeith Stanfield plays Grofield, Parker’s frequent companion in the books and a more affectionate and ebullient character, with Mark Wahlberg. Keegan-Michael Key, Dermot Mulroney, and Rosa Salazar are listed next to him in unspecified roles. It would be unfortunate if Play Dirty didn’t get a theatrical release given the growing anticipation for the film and the likelihood that viewers will enjoy a light-hearted adventure. However, when this is out, Amazon subscribers will be the most delighted.
“The Gorge”
The Gorge is a chic sci-fi thriller starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy about two postkeepers on opposite sides of a huge gorge. They must band together in order to defeat and flee a threat that is beyond their capabilities. With elements of science fiction, horror, and romance, it’s a sort of romantic thriller that would be a big hit in theatres. Scott Derrickson, who also helmed The Black Phone, is the director of The Gorge.
Anya Taylor-Joy is a versatile actress who seems to be able to carry off any look, so it’s always a pleasure to see her in action parts. Her dark hair is trimmed into a short bob with fringe in The Gorge, which is quite different from how fans and viewers often perceive her. While Derrickson undoubtedly prepared some intense sequences knowing his approach, Miles Teller also loves his new role as an action hero. With such a stunning teaser, it’s unfortunate that the visual extravaganza won’t be released in theatres. It looks like it would look spectacular on large screens, especially in IMAX.
Apple TV+ will begin streaming The Gorge on February 14, 2025.
‘You’re Cordially Invited’
One of the newest comedy to hit streaming services in 2025 is You’re Cordially Invited, which stars Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon as parents planning their children’s weddings only to discover the venue has double booked them. They must figure out how to handle the situation without ruining one another, but after that accident, everything just starts to go wrong. Will Ferrell even wrestles an alligator in one scenario. You’re Cordially Invited was written and directed by Nicholas Stoller, whose other works include Neighbours and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
There aren’t many comedies on the schedule these days, but they used to do well at theatres. Comedy might provide some balance, but the majority of the films on the box office lists are action, horror, or drama, all of which are cool. This has been a persistent issue, with comedies gradually moving to streaming services due to the high cost of theatrical releases; perhaps this is why You’re Cordially Invited gets sent to streaming right away, even though it would be enjoyable to laugh in theatres once more. In any case, fans are looking forward to it on Amazon, so it will be much more comfortable to laugh and snort at home where only the family can hear.
“Fountain of Youth”
Lately, Guy Ritchie has been really busy. He’s getting his hands on a film that appears to be a hybrid of his most recent hits, Operation Fortune and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Fountain of Youth, starring John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, and Eiza González, is marketed as an action adventure. It centres on the reunion of separated siblings in search of the Fountain of Youth. Naturally, they hope that its myth is true and that it will grant them immortality if they discover it.
As though their father was Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), Krasinski and Portman portray Luke and Charlotte Purdue, a brother and sister with a history and archaeology background. Ritchie describes this film as being “in the vein of Indiana Jones but contemporary.” We agree. It seems like a waste to find out that the film will be available on streaming services immediately after having a stellar cast and a compelling, family-friendly plot. A contemporary version of Indiana Jones, Fountain of Youth might draw audiences of all ages to the theatre. In this manner, parents can halt the film in case their children become agitated or want to play Indiana Jones on their own.
It is anticipated that Fountain of Youth will debut on Apple TV+ in 2025.
“Back in Action”
Cameron Diaz’s comeback should be enjoyed in theatres. Jokes aside, Back in Action features familiar characters making a comeback to the action comedy genre: Jamie Foxx, who persuaded Cameron Diaz to return, returns to full-time filmmaking in 2023 after dealing with health concerns, while Diaz himself returns to the screen after a ten-year hiatus. In their different ways, the two are accustomed to the action comedy genre, and Back In Action is sure to be entertaining and humorous. The film was directed and co-written by Seth Gordon, whose prior work includes the television series Atypical and the film The Lost City.
Matt and Emily, a couple who are both former CIA officers, are the subject of Back In Action. After years of hiding, they are confronted with two problems when they find themselves in trouble: beating the people pursuing them and remembering the ropes after a lengthy absence. For Diaz, who retired in 2014 after appearing in Annie with Foxx, the concept is somewhat perfect. Due in part to the nostalgia of seeing famous faces and in part to its intriguing idea, this action comedy would be fantastic on the big screen. However, it will go straight to Netflix, which Jamie Foxx and Seth Gordon are both quite familiar with.
“Frankenstein”
For his long-term contract with Netflix, Guillermo del Toro is getting ready for a show. He has been referring to that spectacle as his dream project for more than ten years, and it is named Frankenstein. People are eager to see new views including iconic monsters and characters after the popularity and acclaim of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu. One of the most often adapted stories is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but given the amount of effort del Toro has put into his adaptation, it is obvious that it will differ greatly from the others. One may argue that it could be even better.
The plot of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein centres on Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac), a scientist who wants to create a technique that will allow the dead to come back to life. Frankenstein eventually achieves the impossibly difficult feat, with disastrous results for both him and his once-dead creation. In addition to Oscar Isaac, the cast consists of Charles Dance, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and Jacob Elordi as the Monster. It’s unfortunate that Frankenstein, a much awaited film, might not have a theatrical release, but it will be instantly accessible on streaming services if it does.
Netflix is anticipated to release Frankenstein in 2025.
“The Electric State”
Originally a visual novel, Anthony and Joe Russo purchased the rights to The Electric State in 2017. After much back and forth, they ultimately chose to direct it themselves and hand off the writing to Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus. In the alternate future depicted in The Electric State, humans are exiled to a 200,000-square-mile region known as The Electric State after robots turn against them. The narrative centres on Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), an orphan who discovers that one of the robots remembers her missing brother. In order to locate him, she teams up with Keats (played by Chris Pratt), a former soldier, to travel through the electrified state.
The film’s trailer, which has already been released, has a very Russo Brother appearance. The Electric State would be a fantastic movie to see in theatres because of its wonderful imagery, soft, warm colours, and fantastical robots and planets. After the Russo Brothers directed The Grey Man for the production business, Universal cancelled its original plans for a theatrical distribution and Netflix took over. The Electric State is highly anticipated, and fans will soon be able to stream it at home.
‘Star Trek: Section 31’
With fresh, well-known projects following Everything Everywhere All At Once, Michelle Yeoh is enjoying the time of her life. She starred in Wicked and is currently directing the next Star Trek movie on Paramount+. Philippa Georgiou, the character she portrayed in Star Trek: Discovery, is the focus of Star Trek: Section 31. Emperor Philippa Georgiou makes a daring comeback in this feature picture, this time accepting an invitation to join Section 31, a covert branch of Starfleet tasked with defending the United Federation of Planets.
In addition to having fantastic costumes and a diverse, underappreciated ensemble, Star Trek: Section 31 has a stunning visual aesthetic. Since Michelle Yeoh plays the lead, her films should all be released in theatres. However, since this is a spin-off from a Paramount+ series, it makes more logical for it to be made available on streaming services. Viewers will undoubtedly stream this film repeatedly because her character, Philippa Georgiou, was a beloved addition to the series and a major factor in its popularity.
‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’
Wake Up Dead Man is the eagerly anticipated third volume in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out series. It continues where the previous films left off, with Daniel Craig’s quirky and astute private investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) unravelling yet another mystery. In a voiceover during the teaser for Wake Up Dead Man, Blanc states that this is his “most dangerous case yet.” Fans of the genre are expecting nothing less than excellent in the third sequel, despite the film’s still ambiguous premise, which may centre around Blanc solving the murder of a singer. Following the SAG AFTRA strike, Johnson began writing the script, and production was completed in August 2024.
Although Daniel Craig reprises his role as Benoit Blanc, the ensemble, as in the first two films, is outstanding and includes both more seasoned actors like Glenn Close and Josh Brolin as well as some current stars like Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny. The original Knives Out movie was released in theatres, but the sequel, Glass Onion, debuted on streaming services after being sold to Netflix. Daniel Craig even predicted that it would be thrilling and enjoyable to see them all on the big screen. The third Knives Out film is still highly anticipated and is expected to be a huge success on Netflix, despite the fact that not much more is known about it.
