Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell: A Journey of Stardom and Tragic Loss at 29

After a fight with cancer, Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell, the eldest daughter of reality TV star “Mama June” Shannon and Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson’s half-sister, passed away. Her age was 29.

Shannon shared a picture of the entire family on Instagram on Sunday to reveal the news.

She started the message by saying, “With a broken heart, we are announcing that [Anna] is no longer with us.” She died quietly at 11:12 PM yesterday night in my house. She put up a fierce struggle for ten months.

Cardwell died “with her family around her,” Shannon continued, and she pledged to provide more information in the days ahead. “We love y’all and continued prayers and thoughts for our family doing this difficult time,” she wrote as she concluded the message.

Cardwell made her television debut alongside Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, her mother and half-sister, on Toddlers and Tiaras on TLC. She later costarred in the spin-off series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, which debuted in 2012.

Cardwell was diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal cancer in her lung, kidney, and liver in March of this year. Her mother verified the grave diagnosis four months later.

“She is at stage four. Shannon stated to Entertainment Tonight, “She won’t go into remission. “We’ve all accepted that, so I just tell people one day at a time ’cause you never know.”

Over the years, Cardwell and Shannon’s relationship has been openly strained. Cardwell moved out of Shannon’s home in 2003 to live with her grandmother before the family spinoff series. In the midst of rumors that Shannon was having romantic relations with convicted sex offender Mark McDaniel, her ex-boyfriend, Cardwell came forward to claim that McDaniel had sexually abused her when she was eight years old, leading TLC to terminate the show in 2014.

Since then, the family has made up, as seen by the attendance of all four of Shannon’s kids, including Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird and Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon, at her marriage to Justin Stroud in February.

Shannon said to PEOPLE at the time, “This was the first time the family had all been together since 2014.” “So it was really special to get married in a place where my family and I have had so many memories!”

Cardwell passed away a few days after Shannon urged followers on Instagram to pray for the family. “We are requesting prayers from you all for our family during this difficult time. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we can, but please know that we greatly appreciate your prayers and thoughts at this difficult time “In her tweet, Shannon included the hashtag #CancerSucks.

Cardwell left behind two daughters, Kylee, 7, and Kaitlyn, 10.
