NBC broadcast the 2023 Globes after the 2022 show was not televised. The ceremony was engulfed in turmoil after a 2021 Los Angeles Times report revealed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization responsible for the Golden Globes, had no Black members, prompting stars and studios to boycott the show in 2022
The 2024 awards season will begin in January on CBS with the 81st Golden Globes, following the debate about the show’s diversity.
The 2022 ceremony was not telecast, and NBC aired the 2023 Globes instead. Stars and studios boycotted the 2022 Golden Globes show after it was revealed in a Los Angeles Times investigation from 2021 that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which oversees the awards, did not have any Black members. This led to chaos around the celebration.
The HFPA promised in May 2022 to create a committee of “racially and ethnically diverse members who will advise the Board and oversee critical organizational reform” in addition to increasing membership “with a specific focus on recruiting Black members.”
The event has since been acquired by Dick Clark Productions, which also produces the Academy of Country Music Awards, the American Music Awards, and the Billboard Music Awards, after the organization was dissolved.
According to a statement from Jay Penske, CEO, Chairman, and Founder of Penske Media and owner of Dick Clark Productions, “We’re so proud to bring the Golden Globes to CBS to celebrate 81 years of award show history.” “CBS’s outstanding 30-year dedication to the Grammy Awards and its contribution to their long-term success are both noteworthy. We have discovered the perfect partner in CBS, a multi-platform distribution model that mirrors the modern ways that people around the world prefer to consume content and an understanding of the importance of live entertainment programming.
The Golden Globe for best stand-up comedy performance on television and the Golden Globe for cinematic and box office achievement will be two new categories. The former will go to the highest-earning or most generally viewed blockbusters that have also attained artistic brilliance.
With eight wins and 32 nominations, Meryl Streep is the most awarded performer in Golden Globe history. Her role as a supporting actor on the Hulu comedy series Only Murders in the Building, which stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, might add to that list.
