“What’s Coming to Netflix: Must-Watch Shows and Movies in December 2023”

If you want to watch as many Oscar contenders as possible before the new year, Netflix offers two buzzy new films for you. Todd Haynes’ May December and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro both arrive in December, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the performances before casting your ballot for the 2024 Academy Awards. There’s no need to save room on your Oscar ballot for Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, which comes out on December 22nd and is most likely a popcorn movie.

December is also an interesting month on Netflix for aficionados of Korean entertainment. Gyeongseong Creature, starring Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee, is one of the year’s most anticipated K-dramas. Sweet Home, the apocalyptic series, returns for a second season after nearly three years. Of course, we can’t forget about another Korean series that will return in December. Single’s Inferno is back for a third season, and the reality dating programme is sure to have viewers swooning once more.

Continue reading for more on the month’s highlights, as well as a complete list of everything coming to and leaving Netflix in December 2023.

The best new Netflix movies and shows in December

May December (Dec. 1)

One of the most anticipated films of the winter — and a safe bet for the 2024 awards season — will be available on Netflix on December 1. When an actor shows up on their porch one day in May December, Gracie (Julianne Moore) and Joe’s (Charles Melton) marriage begins to fall apart. Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) has made it her objective to learn about their connection beyond the tabloid headlines from two decades ago in order to prepare for a film. But what happens when the actress goes too far with her research? [Trailer]

The Crown (Dec. 14)

Part 2 of The Crown’s final season premieres on November 16. This chapter debuted three new television stars: Rufus Kampa as little Prince William, Ed McVey as the prince’s elder incarnation, and Meg Bellamy as Kate Middleton. Season 6 is a difficult one because it depicts the end of Princess Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) life. [Trailer]

Maestro (Dec. 20)

Bradley Cooper’s Maestro is another film that is predicted to receive major Oscar attention. Cooper not only directs and writes the biopic about composer Leonard Bernstein, but also plays the primary part. Carey Mulligan plays Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre, and it’s hardly surprise that critics have already praised both leads. [Trailer]

Gyeongseong Creature Season 1 Part 1 (Dec. 22)

In this historical thriller series, two of Korea’s biggest names, Park Seo-joon (who you may have seen in The Marvels) and Han So-hee, link up. It’s 1945 in Gyeongseong, as Seoul was once known, and the people living under Japanese domination must confront a beast spawned by human greed. Wi Ha-jun, who played police officer Jun-ho in Squid Game, also joins the cast. [Trailer]

Rebel Moon — Part 1: A Child of Fire (Dec. 22)

Can a mega-budget sci-fi action movie franchise be born on a streaming service rather than on a large theatre screen at multiplexes across the country? With Zack Snyder’s next project Rebel Moon, we’re about to find out. The original IP sounds like Seven Samurai but in space (and with more of Snyder’s characteristic slow-motion), with a heroine (Sofia Boutella) gathering powerful warriors to aid her ward off attacks on innocent farmers by a gang of bullying jerks. Snyder has been working on this for almost a decade, and he first offered it to LucasFilm as a new Star Wars world branch. Starring alongside Charlie Hunnam are Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, and Ray Fisher. Part 2 will be released in April, so you won’t have to wait long to finish the story.
