Authorities in New York City have reported that a 24-year-old woman was discovered dead in a building’s trash compactor on Friday.
Brooklyn resident Jaclyn Elmquist was found “unconscious and unresponsive” in the basement of a West 28th Street Manhattan building on Friday, according to information released by the New York Police Department.
The discovery was made soon after a call was placed to the police that day at 2:40 p.m. EMS pronounced her deceased at the site.
A Deputy Commissioner of Public Information spokeswoman stated, “A preliminary investigation determined the deceased’s injuries are indicative of having fallen down the garbage chute.”
“There is no criminality suspected at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.”
The NYPD reports that the cause of her death is yet unknown and will be ascertained by the office of the medical examiner.
WNBC reports that Elmquist was not a resident of the building when he was discovered by a building staff member at the opulent residential complex in Manhattan’s Chelsea area.
She can be seen allegedly going along the street on Thursday night while attempting to open doors to several buildings in surveillance footage that the outlet posted. WNBC was also informed by sources that authorities are looking into if the woman’s death has anything to do with the case of another missing individual.
Elmquist’s cousin posted a missing flyer to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, stating that the girl “didn’t come home or show up for work” on Friday after having “left a work party in Manhattan” on Thursday.
Additionally, her relatives disclosed that she was last seen entering a yellow taxi outside of a restaurant in Chelsea, which is located about 12 blocks from W 28th Street.
“I wouldn’t have expected that at all,” a building resident told WABC-TV. “We have great security in the building, our doors are always locked, we have lots of cameras, just honestly upsetting to hear that happened.”
