A Merry Little Ex-Mas: Netflix Begins Production in Toronto

A holiday-themed, genre-bending romantic drama has been ordered by Netflix! According to The Cinemaholic, the streaming behemoth has approved the Christmas movie “A Merry Little Ex-Mas,” also known as “The Last Christmas.” The film’s principal photography will be conducted in Toronto, Ontario, from February 3 to March 12, 2025. The cast features Melissa Joan Hart, Pierson Fode, Oliver Hudson, and Jameela Jamil in addition to Alicia Silverstone. The leader is Steve Carr.

Kate and Everett, the married couple at the center of the story, decide to dissolve their union just before Christmas. In order to keep things amicable for the benefit of their kids, they intend to go through a pleasant divorce. The two intend to accomplish this while upholding etiquette and transparency through their honesty policy. But the unhappy couple quickly learns that both of them have been flagrantly breaking their rules, which makes their divorce into a barely contained argument of bitterness and annoyance.

Netflix’s 2024 schedule demonstrates the company’s recent heightened emphasis on Christmas-themed content. Hallmark actress Lacey Chabert played the lead in “Hot Frosty,” one of the season’s early releases. Through his innocent appeal, she plays a lonely woman whose snow sculpture mysteriously transforms into a lovely man who teaches her to love again. “The Merry Gentleman,” which has been dubbed “Magic Mike meets Christmas,” is yet another unexpected release from the streaming behemoth this season. It centers on a woman who hosts a provocative dance event with an all-male cast with a Christmas theme in an attempt to rescue her family venue.

“Our Little Secret,” another holiday offering, focuses on Avery (Lindsay Lohan), who chooses to spend Christmas with her lover and his sister. But when she learns that her partner’s sibling’s lover is actually her ex, whose proposal she turned down eleven years prior, things get complicated.

Toronto, which is well-known for its wintry landscapes, automatically evokes a festive mood and is a popular location for Christmas movie productions. The city boasts skilled crews and well-equipped film studios, in addition to the winter scenery that will welcome the “The Last Christmas” production team in February. Netflix’s “Meet Me Next Christmas,” “The Santa Clause,” “A Christmas Story,” and “The Christmas Chronicles” are a few of the Christmas films shot in the city.
