Title: Bride Found Murdered in Wedding Dress Hours After Saying ‘I Do’—Husband Arrested 13 Years Later

Nearly 13 years after his newlywed bride was discovered dead in her wedding gown in her Illinois home, a man was taken into custody in Mexico.

According to a statement released last week by the FBI’s Chicago Field Office, 26-year-old Estrella Carrera was discovered dead in the bathtub of her Burbank, Illinois, apartment on May 13, 2012, less than 48 hours after she wed Arnoldo Jimenez.

According to the FBI, on May 17, 2012, Cook County authorities charged her husband, Arnoldo Jimenez, who was 30 at the time, with first-degree murder. In order to avoid prosecution, federal officials quickly obtained an arrest warrant against him on a federal charge of unauthorized flight.

Jimenez was recently detained in Monterrey, Mexico, according to a statement released by the FBI’s Chicago Field Office on Friday, January 31. He was apprehended without any problems.

At the time, the Chicago Tribune, CBS Chicago, WGN 9, and other media agencies stated that Carrera had been discovered in a bathtub wearing her silver wedding gown.

She died from several stab wounds, ABC 7 Chicago earlier reported, citing the autopsy. An FBI official informed CBS News that woman had been stabbed at least 18 times.

Carrera, mother of a then 9-year-old daughter and 2-year-old boy, had married her suspected killer less than 48 hours before she was found, WGN 9, FOX 32 Chicago and the Chicago Tribune reported. The couple shared the 2-year-old kid.

Authorities believe Jimenez stabbed Carrera in his Maserati before pulling her corpse and leaving it in the bathtub, CBS News and the Associated Press reported.

She was found when family members grew concerned since she had not picked up her two children from a relative’s house, per ABC 7 Chicago and CBS News. Her sister notified police, who responded to the residence for a welfare check when they found her.

The mother of two had not mentioned to anyone that she was getting married, the AP and CBS News said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the guy was finally arrested.

In 2019, the FBI had issued a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest, and the figure was upped to $250,000 in 2023, WGN 9 reported.

The FBI commended the public, Mexican law enforcement, and the Burbank Police Department for helping to make the arrest.

While he awaits extradition to the United States, Jimenez is being detained in Mexico.
