At Least 10 Killed in Mass Shooting at Adult Education School—Worst in Swedish History

According to Swedish police, a shooting at an adult education institution claimed “about 10” lives.

According to a statement from the city, the shooting took place at Campus Risbergska in Örebro, Sweden. The shooter is thought to have been dead, according to the police.

It was unknown how many individuals were hurt in the incident, but authorities said they are trying to identify the victims. Police have cautioned that the death toll may rise, according to the Associated Press.

According to the AP, the institution provides primary and secondary education and caters to individuals over the age of twenty. According to the paper, it also includes vocational training for individuals with intellectual disabilities and programs for immigrants attempting to learn Swedish.

Police said they heard gunfire shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time. According to police, the shooter was one of the patients admitted to the hospital.

Although they would not rule out the potential of more offenders, police later stated that they believe the unidentified shooter acted alone.

“It is a very painful day for all of Sweden,” Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on X. “I also think of everyone whose typical school day was turned into a terrifying one. No one should have to endure the agony of being confined to a classroom while terrified for their lives.

“We’ve seen brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people – this is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history,” Kristersson said during a press conference, according to CNN.

Although investigators have not explored a potential motivation, the AP stated that police do not believe the shooting was tied to terrorism.
