Travis Kelce’s return to the Chiefs for the upcoming season is uncertain, according to Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes, 29, was questioned about whether he has spoken with Kelce, 35, whether he will retire from football or play another season in the NFL after the team’s heartbreaking loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl.
After the 40-22 defeat, Mahomes told reporters he would “let Travis make that decision on his own” because he deserved a well-earned break after a demanding season.
“He’s given so much to this team and to the NFL,” Mahomes remarked at the NFL star tight end. “And he’s been such a joy, not only for me to work with, but for people to watch.”
Fans “can see it” since Kelce “always makes plays in the biggest moments,” the quarterback added, adding, “And he knows he still has a lot of football left in him.”

“If he wants to put in that grind” again to commit the time and effort required to play pro football, however, will determine whether Kelce rejoins the NFL, Mahomes clarified.
With his three Super Bowl victories, Mahomes said that Kelce would already be a “gold jacket guy” and a “first ballot Hall of Famer” if he were to hang up his cleats. “But I know he still has a love for the game,” Mahomes added, “and he’ll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own.”
Throughout the game, Kelce and Mahomes appeared defeated on multiple occasions as the Eagles scored more goals and increased their advantage to double digits.
Kelce declared himself the “happiest” he had ever been in the run-up to the Super Bowl.
I believe I’ve found everything. I just have to keep it all, you know. I adore my current situation in life. I’ve never been happier than I am right now. I’m enjoying going in to work and what I do for a job in my career. In an interview with Westwood One Sports on Saturday, February 8, he stated, “And I have an incredible support of family and friends who are chasing me down here for yet another Super Bowl.”
